Birdlime is the name for a sticky substance, usually made from holly bark or mistletoe, which is spread on branches to trap wild birds intended for export or trade. The film observes one bird who barely manages to escape this industry, yet remains trapped in a cage and surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and un-birdlike creatures.
This is my second short film as a director. It is inspired by the effect of the media on our perception of exotic animal ownership. It has played in a number of film festivals so far in 2017 (listed below). If you're interested in seeing the film, please scroll down- it's available online for free!
I made this film thanks to financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts, and Ontario Arts Council. It was shot over the course of 9 months at PixFilm studios, with equipment supplied by The Toronto Animated Image Society. Post-production services, like sound design, colour correction and DCP creation, were supplied by Victory Social Club.
